The representatives of The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players’ Association are scheduled to meet once again on Thursday to resume their negotiating to finalize a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that is being held at an undisclosed location in New York City. This is almost the third consecutive day of meetings between the two parties, as they previously met for roughly six hours on Wednesday and for a seven-hour session on Tuesday
The Deputy Commissioner of NHL, Bill Daly, disclosed that “the National Hockey League’s negotiating committee met with representatives of the National Hockey League Players’ Association for approximately 5-1/2 hours today.” He added that the “meetings are scheduled to resume [Thursday]. We do not intend to comment on the substance or subject matter of today’s negotiations.” On the other hand, the Executive Director of NHLPA, Donald Fehr, stated that “the NHLPA and the NHL met today to discuss many of the key issues. We look forward to resuming talks [Thursday].”
This set up of bargaining session was triggered once again after a private one-on-one meeting on Saturday between Daly and NHLPA Special Counsel Steve Fehr. Before that meeting on Saturday, representatives of both the League and the Union were facing a deadlock of negotiations since Oct. 18.
The NHL and NHLPA have not been able to conclude a CBA since Sept. 15 so the regular season schedule for 2012-13 had to be cancelled up till Nov. 30. In addition, the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the Hockeytown Winter Festival have both been cancelled.
