Gerard Kennedy has declared himself separate from the controversial legislation that has banned teachers’ strikes, freezing wages, and curbed their benefits, as he prepares himself for the campaign of taking over the post of Premier Dalton McGuinty.

Kennedy was giving an interview on Sunday when he stated that if he is given a chance he will immediately recall the prorogued legislature after the Jan. 25-27 Ontario Liberal leadership convention. Kennedy is a former education minister, who quit Queen’s Park in 2006 for entering in federal politics, and is now going to formally compete in leadership bid on Monday morning with an official announcement on CP24.

Kennedy used his Sunday’s interview for largely criticizing the Bill 115, which was a legislation approved back in September by the minority Liberals with Progressive Conservative backing. Kennedy explained his stance by stating that “I do not need legislation to get a good arrangement for teachers, students, parents, and the public.” He explained that “I wasn’t at those tables, I didn’t vote for those things. I won’t need legislation to solve problems with teachers or other public servants.”  Kennedy promised to insert “goodwill” in the negotiations with 481.000 other unionized workers that are currently negotiating with the province. He promised that “that’s going to be different.”

Posing to be an outsider, Kennedy highlighted that “people will accept from me that I wasn’t part of things that they think are problematic.” Apart from Bill 115, he made references to rectify the ORNGE air-ambulance scandal and past problems at eHealth Ontario.
