A 33-year-old resident of Toronto has decided to stage a sit-in on Jarvis Street, where the city workers begin the controversial work of removing the bike lanes this morning. Steve Fisher was sitting on the road at the southbound lane just north of Wellesley St. E. at 1:34 pm soon after the work started.
The contracted city workers had just started off their work and were only half an hour under way when Fisher arrived. Fisher claims that he is prepared to face police in case the situation arrives. He stated that “I know you’re doing your job but I’m not going to move.” He explained his point of view by stating that “I don’t believe the Jarvis bike lanes should be removed.” He mentioned that “before the lanes were involved I was hit twice by cars.”
The supervisor of the contracted workers, Jim Gillberry, spoke to the city office for advice on how to handle the situation. Than after ten minutes or so, the scrubbing truck started working around Fisher and as he maneuvered to work south of Wellesley there was another protestor waiting. The truck then pulled around the second protestor only to run into another protester sitting on the street. The situation seems to be getting serious and people are expecting a considerable ‘sit-in’ to continue this afternoon. Fisher told the media that “I’m just one guy. I’m not going to chase them down the street … Other people will be coming.” Fisher is a member of the Canadian Reserves and a writer on arts and culture.
