The winning honors of the 2012 Governor General’s Literary Awards are mostly dominated by women, as major awards were given to authors including Linda Spalding and Susin Nielsen, and illustrator Isabelle Arsenault.

The award ceremony is managed by The Canada Council for the Arts as an annual literary honor. The list of this year’s recipients of awards was revealed in Montreal on Tuesday morning. It was discovered that Women have won five out of seven major English-language categories. Gov. Gen. David Johnson stated that the awards offer “not only a chance to honour our very best books, but it is also a chance to pay tribute to Canadians who are rising stars in the world of literature.” He mentioned that “I congratulate all the winners who have worked hard to add their tale to our collective memories.”

Toronto’s Spalding was awarded the prize for best fiction book, for the book entitled The Purchase, which is a historical tale looking back at the lives of slaves and slave owners. The jury admired the writing skills of Spalding by saying that the book was “warm, dignified prose” in its citation. It was attributed as “an historical novel about race, religion and family, Linda Spalding’s The Purchase is refreshingly free of retrospective judgment.”

Another author, Nielsen from Vancouver, received the prize for best children’s literature for the text entitled The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen. The jury spoke about the work in these words: “thought-provoking and relevant, it addresses the effects of bullying in a realistic, compelling and compassionate way, exemplifying the adage ‘There are two sides to every story.'”
