The federal government has officially allowed Nova Scotia to enlarge the limit of the number of people the provincial government can fast track through the immigration system. Premier Darrell Dexter made the announcement on Wednesday declaring that 200 more immigrants are allowed for this year only.

Dexter explained that this addition will make the total number of nominees from 500 to 700. Nova Scotia was previously never able to fulfill its quota of even 500 before 2010. But in 2010, the province was able to fulfill its given quota of nomination of people allowed under the nominee program. Dexter explained that every year after 2010, Nova Scotia has repeatedly requested permission from the federal government to ultimately double the number of skilled workers it can accept through the channel.

Dexter informed reporters that “I think they’re looking to see.” He stated that “we’ve been arguing to them, ‘You give them to us and we’ll use them.’ I think this is a little bit of, you know, put up or shut up.” The nominee program allows immigrants to apply in several categories: skilled workers, international graduates, community identified people, family business workers, non-dependent children of nominees and agriculture.

The Executive Vice-President and Chief Economist with the Greater Halifax Partnership, Fred Morley, attributed that he is contented with the news of federal government increasing the cap. He said “a lot of people that understand that we need more talented people heading to Nova Scotia wanted to see some kind of increase.”
