The Forbes magazine has listed The Toronto Maple Leafs to be the first NHL team to become worth US$1 billion. The Leafs, despite not winning a Stanley Cup since 1967, are now apparently worth $250 million more than the following most valuable franchise, i.e. the New York Rangers. The Montreal Canadiens are worth $575 million.
Furthermore, the list places The Chicago Blackhawks being worth $350 million, Boston Bruins with $348 million and Detroit Red Wings at $346 million in the top six spots, asserting that the league’s six original franchises are also its most valuable. As far as Canadian teams are concerned, The Vancouver Canucks is the second Canadian team to make it on the list, at the seventh place with $342 million. The Calgary Flames are listed at 12th position with $245 million, the Edmonton Oilers are ranked 14th at $225 million, while the Ottawa Senators stay at 16th position with $220 million and the Winnipeg Jets grab 20th place with $200 million.
Quite noticeably, the worth of The Jets got doubled in a very short time as they won their first full season in Winnipeg. Forbes previously calculated the franchise to be worth of $164 million last year and at $135 million before it in 2010. The least valuable team among the top 30 was the St. Louis Blues with $130 million, preceded by the Phoenix Coyotes at 29th place with $134 million. The Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings was 10th with $276 million worth.
