The members of ‘Idle No More’ movement, backed by the Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence’s hunger strike, have now blocked a rail line in Quebec’s Gaspé region, as part of recent ongoing demonstrations.

The protesters, who belong to the Listuguj Mi’gmaq community, have begun a complete blockade of the tracks at Pointe-à-la-Croix for as long as necessary. A spokesperson representing the demonstrators, Alexander Morrison, claims that “it started with some youth in our community who felt a strong need to take action in solidarity with Chief Spence and the Idle No More movement” and now “we are allowing passenger trains through our blockade as we are aware our fight is not with the citizens of this country, but rather the Harper government.” On the other hand, Chief Spence have alleged to carry on her hunger strike, i.e. already 23-days-old, until Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets to discuss Bill C-45, which she complains is straightforwardly attacking their territorial rights.

As the time passes, the ‘Idle No More’ campaign is gathering more and more supporters who are now spread not only over entire Canada, but also abroad, in their pursuit of pressuring Harper government to arrange a meeting to discuss important issues including inequality and treaty rights. A recently published post on the Idle No More website states that “Idle No More feels that any acts that are not in line with peace and solidarity only detract attention from our ultimate mission.” The website has so far organized peaceful marches and highly visible demonstrations, including flash mobs at several malls.
