The Education Minister of Ontario, Laurel Broten, has made an announcement declaring that the ministry will be forcefully imposing now contracts on all Ontario teachers, through the recently acquired powers by the controversial Bill 115.

She made the announcement during a news conference on Thursday, asserting that the contracts imposed on the province will be the same ones as already signed by the Catholic teachers. The contract of Catholic teachers’ included wage freeze for most teachers, a decrease in the number of sick days allowed to teachers every year and a cap on the number of sick days cashable when teachers’ retire. The controversial Bill 115 has allowed the government to be able to put a complete ban on any teachers’ strikes. The province had given a deadline of Dec. 31 to the teachers for reaching an agreements. Broten summed up her announcement saying that  “I urge teachers not to move to illegal strikes.” She added that “It is my sincere hope that we will see extra-curricular activities come back in the new session.”

The president of the local bargaining unit of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, Chantal Mancini, asserted that this announcement has made her feel “utter disgust.” She alleged that “It’s unprecedented and it’s unbelievable that the government would attack collective bargaining rights and attack democracy.” Mancini alleged that she will be meeting with other OSSTF leaders next week to strategize next step of teachers. She alleged that “this level of government can expect a larger political battle moving forward,” Teachers’ unions have already threatened to organize protests in 2013, though it was not clarified whether these strikes will be just one-day strikes or worse.
