The demolition team designated to abolish the Elliot Lake mall has arrived to down the mall, where two people lost their life while another 20 were injured when part of its roof fell on the ground. Mayor of the city, Rick Hamilton, spoke about the occasion during a phone interview on Thursday, when he was asked on the reaction of people who work in the small northern Ontario town, saying that “It’s bittersweet.”

Hamilton explained that “the mall has always had a close relationship to many of the people who lived (and) who were raised here but at the same time it’s a fresh start as well. It’s left a lot of bad memories and by and large what I’m hearing in the street is it’s high time it’s been removed from the landscape of Elliot Lake.” Relevant authorities have expressed that the demolition is estimated to take almost 40 to 60 days.

Chief administrative officer of the town, Rob deBortoli, stated that demolition team will be following strict provincial guidelines. He shared that majority of the material will be recycled, hence workers will be spending majority of their time sorting the debris and ensuring that it is sent to the relevant places. deBortoli told that “the demolition will be very controlled, meaning that the mall will be dismantled in a systematic, piece-by-piece process and there should not be any risk associated with any of the material from that site making its way out of the property.”
