The defenceman of Canada’s Junior Hockey team in Russia, Griffin Reinhart, will not be able to play in the game for bronze medal game against Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championship. He will rather be sitting idle as a spectator and watching the team play on Saturday, along with the next three games in any International Ice Hockey Federation event.
Reinhart has been suspended for four-game in offence of high sticking Vince Trocheck during the semi-final game against the U.S., which Canada lost by 4-1. Hockey Canada deems this suspension to be the longest and harshest penalty in the history of the tournament. During the match, the Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman received two minute minor. Reinhart attended the hearing along with the Hockey Canada’s senior director of hockey operations, Scott Salmond, after which he mentioned that “I wanted to be a part of that game (against Russia). It’s the last game of the tournament, so it’s really devastating to me.”
Reinhart was the third Canadian player to have gone for hearing during the tournament. Salmond has filed an appeal on behalf of Reinhart, claiming that the disciplinary committee has shown lack of consistency. He alleged “that’s the largest suspension, the harshest suspension of this event.” Salmond also added that “we’re trying to get some consistency, understand one game, two games, four games. When we’re dealing with young players they need to understand what the standards are.” He further added that “I’m never going to apologize for the way Canadian kids played. I don’t believe Griffin Reinhart meant to slash that player in the head. I really don’t.”
