WestJet Plane in Kelowna Slips During Takeoff

A WestJet airplane full of passengers slipped during takeoff while sliding off due to a tarmac into a snowbank at the Kelowna Airport in B.C this morning. The WestJet Flight 150, which attempted to takeoff during blizzard, was scheduled to leave Kelowna at 7 a.m. PT for Edmonton.

One of the passengers on the plane, Jennifer Kelm, states that the plane was fully occupied at the time of incident, and it was about to be de-iced when it slipped sideways into a snowbank. Kelm alleged while on the plane, that “I can see the engine in the snow, just the bottom part touching the snow.” A spokesperson of the airport, Janelle Hynes, confirmed the news, while adding that none of the passengers were hurt during the incident. She informed that the “aircraft rescue firefighters are in the process of assisting to unload the passengers from the aircraft.” Hynes further added that all passenger of flight 150 will be compensated by diverting them to another flight, which hopefully takeoff for Edmonton as soon as possible.

There has been numerous short closures at the airport on Monday morning due to the intensive and continuous snowfall along with poor visibility. Hynes urged all passengers to consult with the airport and seek update of delays prior to leaving from home for the airport. Noticeably, as of 10:15 a.m., airport’s website enlists the status of Flight 150 to be on time. Moreover, the authorities have issued snowfall warning in effect for the Okanagan, as up to 15 centimeters of snowfall is predicted for the region on Monday.
