Spokesperson of the Chief of Attawapiskat First Nation, Theresa Spence. has confirmed that she has complete intention  of attending the “working meeting” scheduled on Friday, among the First Nations chiefs and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Previous reports alleged that she might not attend the meeting, since the absence of Gov. Gen. David Johnston was confirmed by an announcement from Rideau Hall on Tuesday alleging that Johnston will not be participating in the talks.

Spence’s spokesperson, Danny Metatawabin, was inquired by news sources on Wednesday morning, when he confirmed that she has all the intentions of attending the meeting, given that her health is not an issue that day. On the other hand, the spokesperson of Gov. Gen. made a statement on Friday, highlighting the different between “a working meeting with government on public policy issues” from the agenda of a meeting held in 2012, among Crown-First Nations, in which Johnston participated as the Queen’s representative in Canada. One of the primary demands of Spence, who has been strictly observing hunger strike since Dec.11, is to hold a meeting among  the Crown and First Nations for discussing so-called “treaty issues.”

Participation of Prime Minister Stephen Harper was confirmed last Friday, after he was invited to take part in a meeting with group of chiefs from across Canada co-ordinated by Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo. Spence seems to believe that participation of The Governor General is of utmost importance because he represented the Crown in the original treaties with aboriginal people.
