Only few days ahead of the much-anticipated NHL return, it has been announced that the general manager and president of Toronto Maple Leaf, Brian Burke, is being fired, who had almost entered the fifth year of his six-year deal. Burke is being replaced by his assistant GM Dave Noni.
Our sources confirm that Burke gave up all his duties on Wednesday morning, while the announcement was made soon after by the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president, Tom Anselmi, through a scheduled news conference. Anselmi alleged that Burke will be still a part of the organizing team behind the team, as he serves as the senior advisor to MLSE board. Anselmi admitted that his franchise has indeed witnessed too many changes in the last 18 months, regarding new ownership and new priorities. While elaborating that this decision was taken after consultations, which were going on since quite a while, Anselmi stated that “there’s no good time to do this.” He added that “once you get to a decision on something like this, it’s really only fair to act upon it.” The new GM-to-be admitted that was informed about the news on Wednesday morning.
Burke has served as the GM of Leafs for almost four years, during which the team missed playoffs of almost every season. Though even before Burke took over from interim GM Cliff Fletcher, the team had already failed at making playoffs for three years. During a press conference in April, Burke promised to stay focused and deliver a “big, physical” team that can win games, alleging that “that’s my top priority.”
