The Mayor of Somerville announced during a press conference this morning, that his city has run out of flu vaccine. A spokesperson for the Mayor’s office, Jackie Rossetti, explained that Somerville originally received 420 immunization doses from the state Department of Public Health last fall, while it later asked for further 300 doses to make sure that the city has enough supply.

Rossetti alleged that “we heard the flu season was going to be more severe this season, so we wanted to make sure we had enough.” She further added that  stock of vaccine expired in Somerville health department, which provides free vaccinations, on Tuesday. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino declared a public health emergency to help deal with influx of patients flooding into the city’s emergency rooms. Rossetti confirmed that people of Somerville do not seem to be panicking, as he shared that “we didn’t receive many phone calls yesterday” from people who would be likely asking for places to get their immunizations.

Local pharmacies currently have sufficient supplies of the vaccine, however, Mayor Joseph Curtatone seems concerned to make sure that the town does not runs out of supply in case vaccination late comers need to get immunized. Curtatone mentioned during the press conference that “It is important to note that we have continued to administer these vaccines over a period of several months, and that the end of our allotted supply was not the result of a particular surge of requests or concerns.” He added that “It’s also important to note that cases of the flu were reported earlier than normal this season, leading to more requests for vaccinations earlier than usual.”
