The mayor’s office in Inukjuak informed media sources that the killer whales trapped in an ice hole near a remote Quebec village are now safe as ice shifted on Hudson Bay. Latest reports show that more water has erupted in the area surrounding the orcas, who were jumping in the air to breath. Strong winds attributed the change in situation overnight, creating a passageway to the open water almost six miles away.
A worker of the mayor’s office, Johnny Williams, stated that “this is great news.” He alleged to be uncertain about how far are the whales able to move, though he confirmed that they were certainly not under the ice hole. News spread extensively as the villagers of Inukjuak witnessed at least 12 whales fighting for life in attempt to breath in air out of a hole slightly bigger than a pickup. The community leaders requested Canadian government to intervene and provide relief to the freeing killer whales, but it declined the request saying the whales are too far away from help.
The director and chief scientist of the SeaDoc Society in Eastsound, Wash., Joe Gaydos, alleged that even though the whales can survive without food for a long time, the worrying factor is the amount of time they can survive underwater. He stated that “the challenge [was] to figure out where the next hole is” and “If that lake freezes over, it’s an unfortunate situation. It’s a very limited chance. It’s a matter of luck.”
