Recent developments confirm that Governor-General, David Johnston, will be participating in the meeting of First Nations leaders at Rideau Hall, after they meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday. An official statement was released by the PMO to all media source on Thursday afternoon, declaring that “the Prime Minister has asked the Gov. Gen. to host a ceremonial meeting with First Nations leaders at Rideau Hall following the working meeting on Friday afternoon, and the Gov. Gen. has accepted.”
The statement was released soon after the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs finished a news conference, challenging to boycott Friday’s meeting in case Johnston did not attend the meeting, while also suggesting other aboriginal leaders to do so too. Chief of Attawapiskat First Nation, Theresa Spence, is already observing a hunger strike since Dec. 11. as she avoids consuming any solid food until she meets with PM Harper and G.G. Johnston. She also declared on Wednesday that she will not be attending the meeting without Johnston’s participation.
It was previously announced by Rideau Hall on Tuesday that Johnston does not plans to attend the so-called “working meeting” to discuss government policy issues. Though now the final announcement from Rideau Hall confirms that the meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Friday. It stated that “his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, has accepted to host a ceremonial meeting at Rideau Hall on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 6:30 p.m., where First Nations leaders will be welcomed following the working meeting with the Prime Minister and Government officials.”
