In a press conference in Winnipeg on Tuesday The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has demanded Ottawa to allow complete authority to First Nations to utilize their own lands, while assisting young aboriginal people to leave “economically bleak” communities in search of a better life. The federation has appealed federal government to expel the Indian Act and stop giving any special treatment like reduced prison sentences and separate Aboriginal Arts Office.

The spokesperson of CTF, Colin Craig, mentioned during the press conference that “all Canadians should be treated the same by government. ” He added that the “dysfunctional” system of aboriginal reserves and its “terrible results” are “Canada’s most shameful legacy.” It was proposed by the taxpayers federation that several policies shall be implemented to end aboriginal poverty, including giving the right to First Nations complete authority of their lands by the end of the year. This implies that aboriginal communities shall no more be obligated to obtain permission from Ottawa for development, lease or selling reserved land.

Craig stated that no economy to be had “is it right to continue throwing hundreds of millions of dollars into these communities when most people can see that there’s no economy to be had?” Furthermore, when Craig was inquired if some federation’s ideas are a call for absorption of First Nations people, he replied that “that’s not the word that I’ll use. The word that we’ll use is transition to where there are better opportunities for people, much the same way that many people on reserves have already left.”
