Recent reports confirm that the Islamist militants responsible of the siege on a Sahara gas plant Algeria included two Canadians. All alleged militants were found dead after a raid of Algerian troops last weekend. The siege began on Wednesday causing several dozen dead bodies until the Algerian troops conducted a military action on Saturday to control the situation. Majority of the deceased were so badly blemished that it was difficult to determine whether they are hostages or militants.
An Algerian private television network, Ennahar, confirmed on Monday confirmed that the militants of the siege included two Canadians. The troops killed all militants during the violence which resulted in an end of the situation. The channel claims to have found out by Agence France-Presse, that “two bodies of Canadian citizens were recovered among the terrorists in Ain Amenas,” although this report is initiated from anonymous sources within Algerian security. On the other hand, the official statement of Algerian sources have declared that the militant group involved in the situation comprised of Arabs, Africans, along with people from outside the African continent.
A reporter of The Associated Press based in Morocco, Paul Schemm, claims that this new has not come as a surprise to him. He stated that “at this point it’s an unconfirmed report from an anonymous security source, but there’s no reason to think that’s not the case because the extremists themselves on Thursday, when they gave a list of nations the attackers were from, they said they had people from Canada along with Algeria, Egypt, Niger and Mali.”
