This Thursday the New Democrats lost yet another MP, Claude Patry, to a different rival political party, i.e. the pro-independence Bloc Québécois. Patry won the seat as a member of Parliament from the Quebec riding of Jonquière-Alma as a part of the so-called orange wave, which took over the province during the last federal election. He made an official announcement on Thursday, declaring that he is no more comfortable with the federalist stance of the NDP.

Patry made a reference to the Clarity Act, during his official announcement, mentioning that “I came to the conclusion that the recognition of the Quebecois nation is incompatible with the maintenance of a law that imposes conditions on Quebec.” He alleged that “the NDP proposition, like the current Clarity Act, goes against this fundamental principal.” Patry accredited to have voted for a sovereign Quebec in the referendums of 1980 and 1995. Patry acclaimed that “I hoped Quebec would become a country and I hope for it still.”

It did not take long for Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to comment on the development and steer political gains from the news. Harper addressed media, while conversing with reporters, in Rivière-du-Loup, Que, when he mentioned that “(there is) ambiguity on national unity, on Canadian unity, that we have among some members of the NDP caucus in Quebec.” He alleged that “we know that (the NDP) caucus has many, many links to Québec Solidaire, which of course is a very strong sovereigntist party, at the provincial level, and this phenomenon with Bloc Orange should give everyone some considerable pause.” He also stated “I think what has happened today is really another example of this particular problem.”
