In spite of the recent decision of the elementary school teachers to carry on their boycott of extracurricular activities, the director of education at Greater Essex County District School Board, Warren Kennedy, made an announcement declaring that the board has geared up some policy changes which give authority to volunteers to run those activities without a teacher present.

The announcement of Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario was later discussed by Kennedy at a news conference on Friday, he stated that the decision was frustrating and disappointing due to the recent step of Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation to lift a similar edict for its members. Kennedy mentioned that “ETFO, in my opinion, has put its political agenda ahead of responsible representation of its members and certainly ahead of the best interest of children and families in public schools both locally and provincially.” He added that “voluntary means voluntary, and if individuals choose to volunteer they should be able to do so freely, of their own accord and without provincial union interference.”

Kennedy alleged that the board has informed the local representatives of ETFO about its intentions. He affirmed that “our conversation with our local (teacher) federations is we’d prefer if teachers did it, but if teachers aren’t going to do it, we’re going to go the volunteer route.” He elucidated that “we’ve done some work on editing and policy. Now, it’s just a matter of when and if we’re going to do that.”

  1. If trhe Greater Essex County District School Board were serious about extra-curricular activities, it would provcomment_IDe sufficient funding for them. Most school boards provcomment_IDe very little money for extra-curriculars.
