A former premier of The Northwest Territories has shared concerns regarding the upcoming transfer of power from Ottawa to Yellowknife, and worries that it will come at a really high cost. It has been decided that NWT will be given complete control of its own land, resources and water for the first time in history.

The native leaders are expected tor receive Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, in the North on Monday for making the much-awaited announcement declaring that an agreement has been reached to form a territorial government for handing over the responsibility to approve resource development. The transfer of power, being called ‘devolution,’ implies that hundreds of millions of dollars will be flowing for new resource revenues into the territory, which is a move highly supported by the residents.

However, a former premier from 2000 to 2003, Stephen Kakfwi, highlighted a number of concerns on Thursday, claiming that the deal was negotiated without the consent of general public, and raised serious concerns regarding the environment and preservation of the land being adversely affected by exploitation of energy and minerals. Mr. Kakfwi mentioned in a telephonic interview, that “the fear is that in the future, the government will always be keenly interested in getting oil and gas activity and mining activity going with less concern for the socioeconomic impact and the environmental impact of these projects.” An extensive period of public consultation is expected to take place before the agreement is put into practice in March or April, 2014.
