The highly controversial prime suspect of the gruesome murder last year which resulted in body parts being separately mailed to several government offices and schools in Ottawa, Luka Rocco Magnotta, is scheduled to appear in a Montreal court today for a preliminary hearing that will decide whether the case is substantial enough to proceed through trial or not.

The prosecutors will be providing evidence and proof for convincing the judge and jury that they have enough material for taking the case to trial. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the lawyers representing Magnotta will be arguing that the pretrial proceedings should be held in private, in presence of only lawyers, judge and clerk. The defence claims that it had made such a request due to the medical and personal history of Magnotta, however, no elaborative detail explaining his past have been provided in court. 30-years-old Magnotta has been accused of first-degree murder in the death of a Chinese born national, Lin Jun, who was studying engineering in Montreal last year. Lin’s father has also reached Montreal to participate in the hearings. Along with the first-degree murder charges, Magnotta is also indicted with following charges as well: Committing an indignity to a body; Publishing obscene material; Criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and members of Parliament; Mailing obscene and indecent material.

Magnotta has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and preferred to proceed through trial by jury and judge. Along with all the international media, Chinese government is keenly following the proceedings of through case through its consulate general in Montreal.
