The widely presumed leader-to-be of the federal Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made a brief appearance in the House of Commons on Thursday, wanting to ask a question from the prime minister regarding his plans to centralize job training. He addressed the speaker, saying “Mr. Speaker, Canadians are worried about their jobs and their MPs who stay silent.”
Mr. Trudeau alleged that “it is time the members opposite learned that they were elected by Canadians to represent the views of their … ” The Conservatives across the aisle cut Trudeau at this point and began booing him, perhaps because they were irritated by Trudeau’s rare appearance and thought he was being hypocritical. Soon after the Speaker was able to calm the aggravation, Trudeau finished his sentence and posed his question, to which the prime minister rose to respond. Harper produced laughter in the house, by stating “Mr. Speaker, I welcome the minister, or the member for Papineau …” Once after the Speaker had again quieted the MPs, Harper again started “I welcome the minister, er, member for Papineau,” referring to Trudeau as a minister for the second time.
Then the prime minister literally stuck his tongue out and frowned at his seemingly deliberate mistake before continuing to respond to the questions raised by Trudeau, after welcoming him for “showing up and making the views of his constituents known for a change in the House of Commons.” Trudeau had not been present in the House much lately due to the intra party election campaigns, for which he has been seen travelling across the country to fill halls his supporters.
