The Ontario Labour Minister, Yasir Naqvi, made an announcement on Tuesday declaring that he did not endorse a highly controversial book regarding Islam, which claims it’s OK for men to physically punish their wives, in contradiction, to the letter he alleged addressed the author expressing his support. The Ottawa member of provincial parliament admitted that he did write the letter, but explained that he did not actually read the book.

Naqvi mentioned in the press conference that “I strongly condemn violence against women,” and “I believe that abuse of any kind is unacceptable and I do not share the views expressed in this book.” Additionally, the former president of the Liberal party explained that he didn’t authorize the author to use his name or comments in the “reviews” section of the book entitled “Islam: Balancing Life and Beyond.” On the other hand, a published report claims that the author, namely Suhail Kapoor, legally acquired permission from Naqvi ti to reprint his letter in the book, which states that a man can “lightly” strike his wife if she shows “serious moral misconduct.”

Naqvi elucidated that he received a letter from Kapoor in 2009 regarding the book. He explained that “I responded, as I do to all letters received at my community office, acknowledging his efforts on this project, which were ostensibly to promote values of tolerance, understanding and respect.” On the other hand, the Opposition Leader, Tim Hudak, has highly criticized Naqvi’s statement, asserting that “I think it’s very disturbing that any member of the assembly, let alone a cabinet minister, would endorse this kind of garbage.” He alleged that “I think that Premier (Kathleen) Wynne needs to call her labour minister on to the carpet to rescind his endorsement of the book and to apologize.”
