Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, has recently affirmed that the federal government has full intention of cracking down on Canadians who travel aboard seeking sex with children, insight of a new W5 investigation revealing that little is being done to prevent sex offenders from flying abroad to indulge in abusing kids.

Toews expressed his commitment during the question period in the House of Commons on Monday, promising that the Harper government is “committed to protecting children in Canada and abroad from sex offenders. We intend to take further action against international sex tourism.” Although the government has yet to plan on what does it intends to do, these words of commitment have come from Toews only two days after the W5/TorontoStar/MiamiHerald revealed the findings of their investigation. The investigation declared that Canada’s sex offender registry is not taking action to prevent pedophiles from travelling abroad, especially to poor countries including Cuba, to engage in sexual activity with children as young as five. Even though the legislation passed in 1997 dictates that any sex crime committed abroad must be treated as if it happened in Canada, little action has been taken in this regard to convict practitioners of sex tourists who target children.

One exception to this leniency is a case of 78-year-old James McTurk, who was recently arrested by Toronto Police while he returned from Cuba with photographs illustrating him to have engaged in sex acts with children. McTurk has been charged with nine offences, including making child pornography and sexual interference.
