Essex MPP Taras Natyshak says the adoption of his motion to pause gaming modernization in Ontario is a major victory for concerned Ontarians, giving them a real say in decisions that affect their communities, like the closure of local racetracks or construction of new casinos.

“My motion ensures that the horseracing industry will have time to develop and adapt to a new operating model, while also addressing the increasing concerns Ontarians have about the introduction of new casinos in their home towns,” said Natyshak. “The Liberals have made a mess of OLG modernization plans which were introduced without any consultation with communities and industry. This motion will make that consultation process possible, something that should have happened from the start.”

Natyshak’s motion requires the government to extend the Slots at Racetracks Program partnership while the horseracing industry develops a sustainable plan forward, and also requires municipalities being considered as new casinos sites to hold a referendum on the issue before or during the 2014 municipal elections.

“This motion goes a long way towards addressing the serious missteps being made in the ‘modernization’ of the OLG and the horseracing industry,” said Natyshak. “The thousands of Ontarians who depend on the horseracing industry can sleep a little easier knowing their future is more secure, and Ontarians concerned about casinos being forced into their backyards can be assured that they will have an equal voice in the decision.”

Natyshak’s motion will also require a legislature-appointed panel to establish fair spending limits for the campaign around the casino referendum.

“The future of gaming in Ontario can’t be decided by the Donald Trumps of the world in secret, backroom deals,” said Natyshak. “My motion gives Ontarians a real say in the future of gambling in their communities.”
