The Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, John Baird, is refraining to make any new commitments to renew Canada’s $300 million in aid spending for the Palestinians. The prior commitment of five-year tends to expire on Sunday, whereas Baird has asserted that he desires to converse directly with the Palestinian Authority before making any future funding decisions.

A short while before departing on a lengthy trip through the Middle East and Persian Gulf, Baird informed reporters that “there’s going to be a dialogue to find out what their priorities are.” He stated that “some of the projects have fallen a bit short, which is normal. We’re committed to finishing those.” Baird’s schedule will bring him to the West Bank in almost 10 days, whereas the remaining part of his trip begins from Jordan on the weekend, and continues over in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Cyprus and Israel. He is planned to meet Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, and Prime Minister, Salam Fayyad.

The Canadian government is evaluating its standing with the Palestinian Authority, as it was recently awarded a historic UN General Assembly vote in November granting it the status of a non-member observer state. Baird alleged that “we have a fundamental difference of opinion with the Palestinian Authority. They know our views well.” However, he added that “but I think it’s tremendously important in my responsibilities to engage in dialogue and I look forward to several meetings in the West Bank during my time in the region.”
