Sen. Patrick Brazeau made his followers overly confused on Monday night, after making a sudden announcement from his Twitter account that he has decided to resign from his Senate seat. Majority were considering it as a late April Fool’s joke, when the controversial senator tweeted at 6:47 p.m., that “I will step down from my position.” In case, it was an April Fool’s Day joke, Brazeau wasn’t alone as previously Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae jokingly alleged that he is now planning to run for Liberal leadership after all.

Regardless of it was a joke, 38-years-old Brazeau will be facing charges of assault and sexual assault stemming from an incident of Feb. 7 at his Gatineau home. Brazeau has pleaded not guilty and is due to appear in court in June. Almost an hour after his first tweet, Brazeau again wrote that “official annoucement (sic) at 10am.” The relatively sober tweet made his followers even more confusion, while several journalists began asserting that the tweets were a hoax. Few journalists even pointed out that April Fool’s day commonly ends at midday, which now makes Brazeau’s tweet an ill-timed attempt at humour.

Brazeau was kicked out of the Conservative caucus by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in February, due to his arrest, while he was also forced to take leave from the Senate following week. Despite his leave, Brazeau receives his $132,000 salary, though he must seek approval from a Senate committee for additional expenses. He is not yet eligible for a Senate pension.
