The Liberals have recently announced another policy in hope of curbing the growing unemployment rate in Ontario, i.e. bringing more people to adopt the field of music. The government recently promised to invest a sum of $45-million to fund grants to bands, studios and record labels in hopes of swelling the province’s recording industry.

The Finance Minister of Ontario, Charles Sousa, and Ontario’s Culture Minister, Michael Chan, were present at the stage set at Lee’s Palace, i.e. a Toronto indie rock bar, to publicly announce their three-year program on Wednesday morning. An approximate crowd of almost more than twenty musicians elbowed for space in the pit, while Mr. Sousa advertised the funding as a method of creating more jobs in the province’s creative industries. He mentioned that there will be “ripple effect of this investment, of these grants, is going to enable us to attract more productions, more talent here in Ontario.” Additionally, he explained that “it’s going to make us an even more dynamic and vibrant province. Folks, I’m so proud of the work that you’re doing.”

This funding will be entailed in the upcoming Thursday’s budget, which will be first of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s minority administration. Premier Wynne has struggled to sustain the support of the left-wing New Democrats for the budget, fulfilling NDP demands like a 15 per cent cut to auto insurance rates and a cash injection for home care into the fiscal plan. Wednesday’s announcement was also likely to reach out to part of the NDP’s base, targeting young, hip voters in downtown Toronto.
