Several hundred anti-capitalist protesters were taken into custody and ticketed in Quebec as they attempted to link this year’s May Day protests to the theme of corruption. Multiple groups of protesters convened outside a private club on Wednesday, where the corrupt politicians and construction executives allegedly met for plotting and conspiring plans of corruption.
The province’s Charbonneau inquiry found out the details of their private rendez-vous at the exclusive Club 357C in Old Montreal have. The inquiry revealed that the construction companies created a cartel that swelled prices of public contracts, in order to share the extra profits with the Mafia, corrupt bureaucrats and political parties. A statement from the Anti-Capitalist Convergence of Montreal stated that “let’s bring our rage directly to the secret dispensaries of power: the private clubs where political and economic elites plot and conspire against the people.” It added that “it is in these quiet lounges and luxurious dining rooms that the capitalists draw up the plans of our oppression and our exploitation.”
However, the demonstrators were prohibited from carrying their message to the site of the club as Police actively hoarded the protest, grouped a number of the demonstrators, and arrested 447 people. Police asserted their intention to hand out plentiful fines of $500, plus fees, for municipal bylaw violations, whereas some might even face criminal charges. Officers said they stepped in after projectiles had been tossed from the crowd.
