Statistics Canada reported that that the contractors approved building permits worth $553.9 million in the Calgary region in March, which is an impressive increment of 7.1 per cent from February. The agency further pointed out, in a report published on Monday, that the construction value has also increased by 21.3 per cent on a year-to-year basis.

It was highlighted that the permits approved in Alberta were of $1.7 billion for March, i.e. an increment of 22.3 per cent on a monthly basis and 38.2 per cent on a yearly basis. It was shown that the residential sector increased up to $821.8 million, depicting an increment of 15.9 per cent hike from February and a 16.2 per cent from March 2012. Whereas, on the other hand, the non-residential sector reached up to $856.7 million, i.e. an increment of 29.1 per cent month-over-month and 69.0 per cent year-over-year. It was discovered that at the national level, contractors received building permits worth $6.5 billion in March, which was an increment of 8.6 per cent from February, i.e. the third consecutive monthly advance.

In the report of Statistics Canada, it was stated that the increase in March was mainly due to the non-residential sector in Ontario and Alberta. Consequently on a yearly basis, permits decreased by 6.7 per cent, while the value of non-residential building permits increased by 19.0 per cent to $2.8 billion. Ontario and Alberta were behind most of the growth at the national level, added the federal agency.
