A portion of the Queen Elizabeth Way, near St. Catharines, has been closed in both directions for general traffic as a result of a four-vehicle crash on early Thursday morning, which left two men dead and another two wounded with life-threatening injuries. Sgt. Dave Woodford explained that the accident took place at approximately 4 a.m. in the morning, when two vehicles on the QEW, near Highway 406, in the Fort Erie-bound lanes collided with each other. He stated that the “two vehicles, a Mitsubishi and a BMW collided with each other.”
Investigators are still looking into the reasons behind the crash but have reported that the collision ignited a chain reaction, due to which a tractor-trailer behind the crash hit the Mitsubishi. Consequently, the tractor-trailer then travelled across the median and hit another truck carrying liquefied carbon dioxide. The passenger in the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the tractor-trailers gave up to his injuries in a hospital a short time after. Woodford revealed that even though liquefied carbon dioxide is not hazardous, officials have begun monitoring the scene. He explained that the carbon dioxide is being transferred into another truck.
The four-vehicle crash has resulted in considerable damage, displacing a 25,000 pound roll of steel that scratched the QEW, which has hence been closed in both directions between Seventh Street and Hwy. 406. In an official tweet of OPP around 2 p.m., it was mentioned that that both the Niagara-bound lanes and the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW are closed.
