A former political fixer, Gilles Cloutier, stood at the witness box at Quebec’s anti-corruption inquiry this morning and started his remarks saying that he lied in a previous testimony.  He informed the commission that he lied the first time, alleging that he owned a home in Pointe-au-Pic, Que., which was in question at his previous testimony almost a the month before the commission took a scheduled break.

Mr. Cloutier had been informed his friends and acquaintances for years that he owned a property with a magnificent view of the St. Lawrence in Quebec’s Charlevoix region, however he now confessed that he, in fact, rented the property for years at an annual cost ranging from $5,000 to $8,000. He admitted to have been “living in purgatory” because his lie was exposed last week. He stated this morning that “I still say all the other things I said in my testimony are the truth.”

Upon inquiry by the commission chair, France Charbonneau, about why would Cloutier lied over something “so trivial.” Mr. Cloutier replied that “I told everyone a long time ago . . . I was pretending,” adding that “its misplaced ego.” Cloutier admitted that he actually had rented the place for more than 10 years, so eventually it became a habit to assert that he was the owner. He also said it was a matter of pride. Previously on May 2, Cloutier had informed the commission that he bought the home in the Charlevoix region for $200,000 and later sold it for $400,000.
