Addressing his first press conference since the well-known and socially active Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, returned to earth from his five month voyage to International Space Station journalists, he shared that “it’s very confusing for my body, right now – for a couple different reasons.”
Commander Hadfield explained that, in space his body was completely relieved of all sorts of affects gravity has on a human body, but now he has to return to the normal feeling of having to worry about holding his head up, or supporting the weight of his body. He stated that “right after I landed, I could feel the weight of my lips and tongue, and I had to change how I was talking – I didn’t realize I had learned to talk with a weightless tongue.” It was elaborated that gravity has a notable effect on the way our body pumps blood, and it has now become a challenge for Commander Hadfield to ensure that there is enough blood being pumped to his head while accommodating to the force of gravity.
Hadfield revealed that “I’ve been wearing a G-suit to squeeze the blood up into my head.” He explained his feelings, saying that “it’s sort of like when you come off a ride at the CNE.” Hadfield elucidated that “your inner ear and eyes are telling you different things.” A broad team of researchers and doctors are helping Hadfield and aiding him to re-adjust his body to life on Earth. He admitted that “my body’s just sore and I’m dizzy, but, It’s getting better, measurably, by the hour.”
