The New Democrats have recently reinvigorated their anti-Senate message in shape of a newly launched website dedication to the purpose of asking people to support the abolition of the Red Chamber amid a growing expense scandal. The site, namely www.rolluptheredcarpet.ca, straight-forwardly claims that “it’s time to abolish the Senate,” while highlighting that the institution will cost Canadians more than $92,500,000 this year “after a budget boost from Stephen Harper.”

Furthermore, the website goes on revealing than an average senator worked for just 71 days in the last year, whereas almost 31 senators remained absent from work for more than a quarter of their work days. The website asks people to sign a petition, while writing a slogan saying: “unelected, unaccountable senators represent the parties that appoint them – not the Canadian people.” Meanwhile, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair also quoted during an interview on Wednesday, that “we want to get rid of the institution, we think it’s a vestigial organ that can be removed without any harm to the body.” He alleged that “we know it’s a complex proposition but if you don’t start the work of getting rid of it, it will never get done.”

Mulcair reiterated that the recent ongoing expense scandal of multiple senators, including Mike Duffy, Mac Harb, Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin, are yet another reason to remove the Senate from Canada’s governance structure. He pointed out that NDP is supporting to abolish the Senate “for 50 years.” He reminded that “it’s not something that came up in the past two weeks.”
