Former Chief of Staff of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Nigel Wright, has made his first public statement since he resigned from his position on May 19. Wright alleged that he admits he made mistakes, but he still stands behind everything he did. Wright has avoided making any public contact since he had to resign after it was publicly revealed that he wrote a personal cheque worth almost $90,172 to cover the wrongly acquired Senate expense claims of Sen. Mike Duffy.

At the time when Wright announced his resignation, he mentioned in a statement that he truly believed that repaying the funds owed by Duffy to the Senate due to wrongly acquired housing claims was “in the public interest.” In a recent interview to CTV News, Wright stated that “I’m going to first of all give my submissions to the ethics commissioner, she’s going to look into this and I think I can stand behind everything I did.” He added that “I made some mistakes, I’m living with the consequences of those mistakes, but I believe I can account for my actions and I think that’s the right forum for it.”

It has been confirmed by the office of Ethics Commissioner, Mary Dawson, that it is actively investigating whether the personal cheque written by Wright to Duffy made any violations of the Conflict of Interest Act. Duffy has resigned from the Conservative caucus due to the controversy, although he is still a senator and has said he believes he will eventually be exonerated.
