Police has confirmed that the northbound and southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway have now been reopened after they were shut down for traffic after around 5 a.m. due to intense flooding resulting in a section of the major Toronto highway completely flooded on early Wednesday just before the start of the morning rush hour. The lower end of the Don Valley Parkway was closed from the Gardiner Expressway north to Bloor St. It was reported that the Don River running parallel to the highway had completely overflown its banks at several locations, pouring out water over the highway.

Toronto Police Sergeant, Brian Bowman, confirmed that he did not receive any reports of flood-related collisions and also that he did not have any news of any vehicles being stuck in the deep water. However, Constable, Clint Stibbe, reported earlier that he is aware of a vehicle which attempted to drive through the water on the southbound lane. He stated that “I don’t know how they got on, but they attempted to go through the flooding area,” but the driver was able to turn around safely.

Constable Stibbe reported that a road flusher is under use for removing all the mud and dirt left behind by street sweepers.  He alleged that “the sewage system has leaked directly into the river and as a result we can’t apply any additional water to the roadway because it’s not going to go anywhere.” The Toronto region was kept under a heavy rainfall warning by Environment Canada since early Wednesday but it has now been lifted.
