During his comments at the annual convention of Canadian municipalities, Justin Trudeau asked progressive cities to seek help form the next Liberal agenda. He mentioned in his speech on Sunday, that the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ report has found out how the federal government is interacting with cities that are under provincial jurisdiction.

Trudeau highlighted that Ottawa often had “minimal response” to the challenges faced by the cities, which mainly included transportation, waste management and aging infrastructure. He stated that more than 2,000 city officials are expected to attend the four-day conference at Canada Place, and while extending an open invitation, he added that “I hope each and every one of you will take this as an open invitation, whatever your political affiliation, to help shape our platform for 2015 and for the future of this great country.”

It was emphasized that cities are only receiving eight cents of every tax dollar, whereas the federal government earns 50 cents and the province gets 42 cents. Trudeau questioned that “how do we ensure Canadians all have access to affordable housing? How do we make our communities, from the smallest outpost to the biggest city, the safest in the world? How can we ensure Canadians in our most rural communities can build strong futures for their families so their kids don’t have to leave?” He further inquired that “how do we ensure all levels of government have the revenue and the revenue sources we need to fulfill our responsibilities to Canadians?”
