Heavy Rain Enters Alberta’s Small Town in State of Emergency

RCMP confirmed in a statement that it is currently on the lookout for two adults who allegedly got lost after their trailer capsized in result of the heavy rain that swelled Highwood River near Longview, Alta., 85 kilometres south of Calgary. The officials have declared the town of Canmore, west of Calgary, in a local state of emergency since the banks of a creek running through the community were inundated.

Officials confirmed that an estimate of 40 homes south of the pedestrian bridge over Cougar Creek have been evacuated so far till 2 a.m. MT on Thursday. Canmore Mayor, John Borrowman, stated that “the situation is actually bad and getting worse,” explaining that “now some of the smaller creeks are starting to flood.” The officials revealed that the evacuees were escorted to the town’s civic centre and two local hotels, whereas several other residents were also cautiously alerted to be ready to move if necessary. Officials have admitted that power is reported to be out at various locations throughout the town.

Canmore RCMP Const. Jeff Jantz alerted that Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 1A are both closed to eastbound and westbound traffic at Cougar Creek. He stressed that “we do not advise travel this way.” A photographer living near Cougar Creek, John E. Marriott, stated that raging torrent were only four metres from his house, when he mentioned that “the little tiny creek that is behind our house … has gone from being two inches deep and about three metres wide to being 150 metres wide and about five metres deep.”
