City officials have affirmed that almost half of Calgary’s downtown has had its power restored. In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the director of Calgary Emergency Management Agency, Bruce Burrell, confirmed that nearly four out of the seven power zones in the downtown core have had their power restored as of 7 a.m. He alleged that “I want to have people going back in and having a sense of normalcy as quickly as possible.”

Furthermore, Burrell explained that “these people [city workers] are working all the time, not only looking at we need to do today, but what does this need to look like three or four days from now.” He also added that “folks, this is a big disaster, we’re going to be working on this for a few more weeks.” According to a recent update from city officials, it was announced that C-Train service has been expanded across the city, and partially in downtown core, as it now includes some lines that were not fully operational before.  Additionally, several bridges were also been reopened, either partially or in full.

City officials urged all downtown employees to remain at home on late Monday night, even though parts of the downtown core had been reopened. It was explained that the streets have been a traffic mess since partial reopening of the core over the weekend, so it was advised that the core be open to residents only. Calgary Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, requested that “we have a lot of work to do downtown, and it’s best to stay out of the way of people doing that work.”
