Authorities Order Evacuation of Labrador Town over Air Quality Concerns

The authorities have issued an overnight evacuation order for everyone living in the town of Wabush, i.e. a western Labrador community, as it advises them escape to escape smoke from a nearby forest fire. Town officials have confirmed that a state of emergency was enforced at almost 9 p.m. local time on Friday, while the residents were immediately asked to transport to nearby Labrador City.

According to town officials, the authorities began a “phased” evacuation in order to circumvent the problems that might be caused by air quality. The Canadian Red Cross team revealed to have registered an exact number of 1,397 evacuees at the Arts and Culture Centre in Labrador City as of 8 a.m. Saturday. Whereas, government sources confirmed that an estimate of 1,800 people had to be removed from the mining town in wake of the forest fires that were burning since last Sunday. Canadian Red Cross in St. John’s has circulated an emergency number, 709-758-8416, which people having cellphone or telephone access can call for help, in response to which volunteers of St. John will quickly respond to take registration details.

Landlines in Wabush were affected due to fire and were down since Friday afternoon, due to which capacity of calling 911 phone services is also affected. BellAliant officials claim to have located the damage on fiber through a helicopter reconnaissance. Spokesperson Mark Duggan stated that the damage has been caused due to a separate fire from the one threatening Wabush, however he mentioned that still the conditions are not favorable to begin repairs.
