The RCMP has arrested and charged two Canadian nationals accused of allegedly conceiving an “Al Qaeda-inspired” plot to blow up the British Columbia legislature on Canada Day. The RCMP officials made an official press conference in Surrey, B.C .on Tuesday, displaying the photos of alleged pressure cooker bombs reminiscent of the deadly Boston Marathon bombing. It was revealed that John Stewart Nuttall, born in 1974, and Amanda Marie Korody, born in 1983, are both charged with knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity, making or possessing an explosive device, and conspiracy.

Assistant Commissioner, Wayne Rideout, explained that the suspects were arrested in Abbotsford on Monday. He elucidated that even though there is no direct evidence relating their latest plot to any international terrorist organization, the investigators are assertive that the threat was real. Rideout stated that “this self-radicalized behaviour was intended to create maximum impact and harm to Canadian citizens at the B.C. legislature on a national holiday.” He added that “they took steps to educate themselves and produce explosive devices designed to cause injury and death . . . They discussed a wide variety of targets and techniques.”

Additionally, Assistant Commissioner James Malizia speculated that even though their motivation for the alleged plot was unclear, the suspects were assuredly found inspired by “Al Qaeda ideology.” Malizia admitted that “there is no evidence to indicate that these individuals had the support or were acting at the direction of a terrorist group, per se.”
