With the temperature soaring today, the Edmonton Police Service reminds Edmontonians not to leave children unattended in vehicles for any amount of time, as it puts the child at an unacceptable risk.

“It’s already extremely hot today; the temperature in a car is even hotter than the temperatures outside. Leaving a child unattended for any amount of time is very dangerous,” explains Acting Sgt. Barry Fairhurst with the Child at Risk Response Team (CARRT). “It doesn’t matter if the windows are cracked open or if it’s just for a few minutes. Police take this type of behavior very seriously and we will lay charges if they are warranted.”

It’s easy to prevent a tragedy from happening. Parents or guardians can do simple things like using drive-through services, planning outings that fit both the child and the adult’s schedule, and waking a napping child or postpone an errand rather than leaving a child alone.

If a member of the public sees a child in a car who is in distress they are asked to call 911 immediately and are asked not to leave the child alone until help arrives. Fear or lack of time should not prevent any member of the public from reporting an unattended child; they may be saving a child’s life.
