Markham woman driver Shabana Ahmed charged for fatal pedestrian collison causing death

Officers with the York Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit have charged a woman following a fatal pedestrian collision in the City of Markham.

On Thursday, July 4, 2013, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a 2009 Toyota Matrix travelling southbound on Markham Road allegedly entered the intersection at Elson Street on a red light.

The Matrix struck a 2005 Toyota Camry which was northbound on Markham Road and attempting to make a left-hand turn. The Matrix continued to travel in a southwest direction and struck two pedestrians on the sidewalk.

The first pedestrian, a 61-year-old woman from the City of Markham, died while being transported to hospital. The second pedestrian, a 48-year-old woman from the City of Markham, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Camry, a 59-year-old man from the City of Markham, was not injured.

The driver of the Matrix, a 55-year-old woman from the City of Markham, was transported to hospital with minor injuries. She was arrested without incident at hospital, charged and later released from custody.

The accused has been released from custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in the Town of Newmarket on Monday, August 12, 2013.
