The rail safety officials in Transport Canada have confirmed that Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway (MMA), the company whose 73-car train devastated a Quebec town, was one of the few companies who were allowed by the federal government to operate trains with only one engineer on board. It was revealed on Tuesday that the company acquired permission from Transport Canada for the reduced staffing in 2012.

Director General of rail safety in Transport Canada, Luc Bourdon, stated that “they had to meet with Transport Canada and demonstrate to us that they could do it safely.” Other Senior Transport Canada officials have also admitted that MMA is one of the two companies, along with Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway, which are permitted to operate with only one employee on a train. Additionally, it was also discussed that even though it was “very unusual” and irrational for the company to abandon the train during night on a main rail line, but it was still not against the rules.

The incident of late Friday night caused vast majority of Lac-Mégantic town to be completely destroy as cars carrying crude oil derailed and blew up, leaving a minimum of 15 people dead and considerably more missing. The government authorities have already begun inspecting the site and are expected to soon reveal some more facts into what happened Friday night. Meanwhile, authorities have allowed a majority of 1,200 residents to return to their homes in the evacuated town, while remaining 800 are still kept on hold until safety precautions are completed.
