The B.C. Coroner’s Service has officially submitted the cause of death of Canadian actor, Cory Monteith, to be an overdose of heroin and alcohol. In a videotaped statement issued on Tuesday afternoon , B.C. Coroner’s Service spokeswoman, Barb McLintock, mentioned that “there’s absolutely nothing at this point . . . to suggest this is anything other than the most sad and tragic accident.”

Monteith’s body was discovered by the staff of Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel after they checked up on him past his checkout time on noon Saturday. According to Vancouver police investigation, 31-year-old Monteith had initially checked into the hotel on July 6. Hotel staff witnessed him checking in with another man and two women, though he was found alone at the time when they returned to his room on the 21st floor just after 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Vancouver police Const. Brian Montague mentioned on Tuesday that “there was evidence in the room that was consistent with a drug overdose,” hence now the police investigation is closed. Montague explained that “there’s an inherent risk when you’re using illicit drugs and there’s nothing legally in this situation that we can see that would cause us to pursue the investigation further.” On the other hand, Monteith remained open about his struggle with substance abuse, as he previously informed Parade magazine in 2011 that he used to take “anything and everything, as much as possible,” and was “lucky to be alive.” Monteith voluntarily checked into and stayed for a month at rehab again this past April.
