The fast actions of civilians and DRPS officers are being hailed for averting a near-drowning of an 11-year-old Pickering boy from the shores of Lake Ontario in Oshawa yesterday.

On Saturday July 17, 2010 at approximately 4:45 p.m. DRPS officers working Paid Duty at the Oshawa International Festival at the Lakeview Park were approached by civilians regarding a child who was drowning approximately 150 metres from shore. Both officers entered the water and assisted at least one civilian in bringing the boy to shore.

The rescuers were assisted during their first aid efforts by an off-duty doctor and paramedic who were waiting on the shore. The victim began breathing on his own and was transported by responding emergency medical personnel to a local hospital for medical treatment and observation. The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition but is expected to make a full recovery.

Durham Regional Police would like to identify all citizens involved during this heroic life-saving emergency for their assistance and to recognize them in a more formal manner.
