Quebec Premier, Pauline Marois, recently mentioned during a question answer session at a university that her sovereigntist party is still working to mold minds towards a third referendum on independence. Conversing with political science students at Université de Montréal on Tuesday, she discussed her ideals and motivations at the head of the provincial government.

Marois confessed that her promises on the hustings have often been thinned to soothe opposition parties, though she boasted to have not given up on the dream that Quebec will one day become a country. She stated that “for a few months now our political party has been working on a campaign for sovereignty, something which has never been done . . . outside of a referendum campaign.” She elucidated that deep thinkers of her party have been working for more than a year to list down comprehensive implications of separation from Canada in the areas of policy, economics and the law. This work has been carried out and kept up to date until the 1995 referendum, which sovereigntists lost by a thin margin.

In response to a student’s question, Marois revealed that “I gave them the task of bringing up to date each one of those studies. They are tools to explain why it’s just as realistic to one day become independent as it was 30 or 40 years ago.” She added that “as for me, it’s every day that I work to advance this project that appears to me as a possible avenue to ensure that we can continue to live in French, develop our culture and respect each other.”
