Nova Scotia Premier, Darrell Dexter, has announced to call a provincial election for Oct. 8, highlighting the economy, leadership and energy to be the big issues in the 31-day campaign. The announcement was made by the Premier on Saturday while he was in the Cape Breton town of Port Hawkesbury, where his government helped keep a paper mill running with a $124.5-million aid package in 2012.

Mr. Dexter announced that “this election is about whether Nova Scotians will risk turning back to the Liberals or building a better future for today’s families with the NDP.” He further added that “today, I am humbly asking for the NDP to be given the opportunity to use the experience we have gained and to keep building a better future, because there is a lot more work to do.” The NDP has released its platform at the same time on Friday, promising to start balancing the books for the next four years while eradicating the harmonized sales tax on family purchases such as car seats and strollers.

Meanwhile, the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives are now expected to soon release their platforms. At the time of dissolution, the NDP held 31 seats in the legislature, the Liberals 12 and the Tories seven, whereas two seats remained vacant. The election campaign has started on a day when the NDP released its platform in Halifax, where it most importantly made a notable promise to keep the books balanced for the next four years.
