The suspect charged for shooting three armed guards dead at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Travis Baumgartner, has pleaded guilty to one count of second degree murder in court on Monday. 22-year-old Baumgartner was charged with multiple offences in the June 2012, which related to a robbery and fatal shooting of 26-year-old Michelle Shegelski, 39-year-old Eddie Rejano and 35-year-old Brian Ilesic at HUB Mall, i.e. a student residence and indoor food court.
Baumgartner looked a little pale, but acted pretty calmly, while standing in the prisoner’s box during court proceedings. So far, Baumgartner has pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder alone. Another guard injured during the shooting, Matthew Schuman, has recovered since, and perhaps due to which Baumgartner has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Schuman. Addressing the courtroom, Associate Chief Justice, John Rooke, alleged that it is “a very emotional case for those who have lost family and friends.” Baumgartner was working as a guard on the same shift. He was later arrested on the same day with $330,000 in cash in his vehicle at a U.S. border crossing adjoining British Columbia.
Previously Baumgartner’s lawyer had asked the trial to be switched from jury to judge alone, which was accepted by the Crown. Commenting on the legal move, Schuman mentioned in an email that Baumgartner’s decision not to be tried by a jury is “a coward’s way out. Just like when he shot us. (From Behind.)” Baumgartner’s trial is now set to reconvene in one week after discussions between Crown and defence lawyers.
